Sandy and Gail visit Xinjiang Autonomous Region in the far northwest of China on the old silk road. This region is populated by Uighurs, a Muslim Turkic ethnic group. The Uighurs have frequently exhibited their unhappiness with domination by the Han Chinese, who have infiltrated the region and have threatened the Uighur culture. The region is also very scenic, ringed by picturesque mountains enclosing an enticing desert.
