Institute of Continued Learning - Collection as Creation: An Art Historical Journey through the Zymoglyphic Region

Show Details

This project focuses on the art historical value of the Zymoglyphic Museum, a self-contained art installation created by Jim Stewart in Portland, Oregon, that takes the form of a museum of a fictional realm of the world. This museum is often considered an attraction, if not a local oddity, but my presentation – as well as the paper that accompanies it – intends to provide evidence and ideas for repositioning the Zymoglyphic Museum as part of the world of Art History. The presentation will first introduce the organization of the museum into four fictional “ages,” divided by Stewart by the included pieces’ general aesthetic cohesion and mutual influence– The Rust Age, The Age of Wonder, the Era of Oriental Influence, and the Modern Age. It will then give a brief overview of the art historical traditions at work in each of these four ages, contextualizing the museum within the art world. Finally, it will offer a visual analysis of a few pieces from each section, acknowledging how Stewart puts a twist on centuries-old art techniques to question what truly makes a piece of art.
