Program Playtimes
On a rainy Saturday, May 4 the public was invited to see archeologists at work at the Jason Lee House at Willamette Heritage Center. A public archeology project seeks answers about what was going on at Mill Creek before and after Rev. Jason Lee moved his mission to Salem in 1841. Their research aims to answer questions about life when Native Americans settled here and life after European-American settlers arrived. The two-year-long Oregon Indian Mission Manual Labor School project is a Preserving Oregon grant award to WiIllamette University from Oregon Heritage. Partners include the City of Salem, Willamette Heritage Center, and the Confederate Tribes of the Grand Ronde.
Grand Ronde Deputy Tribal Historic Preservation Officer Briece Edwards is pleased that the City and Willamette University are “ taking responsibility to do thorough research” giving meaning and context to what is found in the layers of soil.
