Program Description
"Over the years, ICL members have watched many music series lectures by Robert Greenberg. He's a bit of a polarizing figure: people either love him or stay away when one of his lectures is presented. That said, his are the only Great Courses lectures that always receive applause from our members! Of all Greenberg's series that my predecessor Grant Hagestedt and I have presented, this one that we're now marching through has been the most universally popular, with its mix of history and music. We're all surprised at the level of scholarship that he brings to the topic.
Now for the caveat: the history part comes at the expense of real exposure to the music! Yes, the snippets he plays are meant to inspire you to seek out recordings on your own -- but today we'll enjoy studying this Mass together, movement by movement, with a bit of a listening guide for each.
